What you need
- A running RemoteRelay agent and a plan allowing shutdown.
- Linked skill and discovered computer power control.
- Saved work and system permissions for the chosen action.
Getting started
- Review the configured RemoteRelay power action: confirm whether it shuts down, sleeps or runs a custom command.
- Save documents and test locally. A session or system dialog may prevent completion.
- With the PC running again, test shutdown from the Alexa app using the correct device.
- Try a command using its name, such as ‘Alexa, turn off Living room PC’, and check the actual power state.
- For a leaving-home routine, choose a trigger you control and test behavior with open documents. Verify wake separately.
Shutdown routines and recovery
A routine can combine shutdown with lights or other devices, but RemoteRelay does not automatically know that every document is saved. Alexa accepting the command does not prove your work is finished.
Before switching off a monitor or power strip, check what the PC needs to keep its network interface powered. Removing mains power may prevent the next Wake-on-LAN request from working.
Compatibility and limits
A stopped agent cannot execute the action. Shutdown and sleep leave different states and do not promise the same Wake-on-LAN behavior. Voice depends on the device name, category and Alexa language.
Test the action on your computer before including it in a routine. Available plans and features are detailed in the portal.
Common questions
Can I put the PC to sleep instead?
Configure and test a sleep action supported by your system. Do not assume the current power action sleeps: check its configuration and result before adding it to a routine.
Does Alexa shutting down my PC mean it can wake it?
No. Shutdown uses the running agent; wake depends on hardware, network and an external Wake-on-LAN sender.
